Walter Hoyer
Oral History Information
Walter Hoyer carried forward one of Germany’s most respected guitar-building traditions, taking over the family business founded by his great-grandfather and made internationally renowned by his father, Arnold Hoyer. During the late 1940s and 1950s, Arnold established the Hoyer name as a respected manufacturer of quality guitars, and when he passed away in 1967, Walter assumed leadership of the company. Building upon the strong foundation created by previous generations, Walter continued producing many of his father’s celebrated designs while also introducing innovative instruments of his own. He embraced changing musical tastes and expanded the company’s offerings to include electric guitars and other contemporary models. Among his most notable creations were the Folding Axe and the Fantiastic, instruments that reflected both his creativity and willingness to experiment with new ideas. Throughout his career, Walter remained dedicated to the craftsmanship and quality that had become synonymous with the Hoyer name. Although he sold the company in the mid-1980s, his influence endured through the many instruments he designed and produced. The Hoyer name continued to be associated with classic guitar styles inspired by both Walter and his father, preserving a family legacy that spanned generations of guitar making.
