Retail Disruptors-Intro (2019 Summer NAMM)

At 2019 Summer NAMM, the opening NAMM U Breakfast Session explored what might be the biggest issue in music retail: disruption. NAMM President and CEO Joe Lamond, the session host, opened the morning by inviting everyone to think of disruption not as good or bad but as an opportunity to adapt and continue to lead the industry into the future. Afterwards, he spoke with a team of thought leaders to explore this concept. (Watch the video to see Lamond’s complete introductory remarks.)

“Some of you I’ve known for years—decades in many cases,” Lamond said. “And in that time, I’ve seen ingenuity that would rival any industry out there, any industry in the world. So will disruption happen? Absolutely. Yet someone’s going to lead us into this next phase. And I believe it’s going to be you.”

He also walked through a handful of the biggest retail disruptors from the last five years, including augmented reality, subscription models, the sharing economy, experiential retail and new online tools.

“Great retail is no longer an option; great retail is an entry point for everything else,” he said. “And I think great retail also means making yourself invaluable in that process.”
