David Rosenthal
Oral History Information
David Rosenthal has been playing keyboards in Billy Joel’s band since 1993, much of that time as the music director. He’s done everything from arranging Billy’s music for live orchestra to creating the definitive sheet music of his beloved songs. After performing the music for 29 years, nobody knows it better. “I’m going album by album,” he revealed in 2011, “and working my way through the whole catalog.” So far Hal Leonard has published Piano Man, Turnstiles, The Stranger, 52nd Street, The Nylon Curtain, Glass Houses, An Innocent Man, Storm Front, and Greatest Hits Volume I & II, and most recently David’s tenth book of Billy Joel songs, River of Dreams. Hear how David got the gig, what it’s like to work for the Piano Man, how he’s contributed to the new Hulu series Up Here, and what NAMM has meant to him.
