Werlein's for Music, a comprehensive music retail store, was established in 1842 by Philip Werlein. Born in Germany in 1812, Werlein emigrated to the United States at the age of nineteen. Besides running his music business, he was also a music publisher. At its peak, the company operated stores in several locations including New Orleans, Lafayette, Alexandria, Baton Rouge, and Shreveport in Louisiana, as well as Biloxi, Jackson, and Vicksburg in Mississippi, where the first store was opened. After over 150 years of service, the final Werlein's store closed its doors in 2003.
