Roland Janes

Roland Janes!  There were musicians/engineers/producers and then there was Roland Janes!  The man nearly single-handedly invented many of the engineering methods used in modern recordings, from microphone placement and cabling to board and tape deck tricks.

Scotty Moore set a date and time on July 4, 1954, to get together with a young singer who wanted to record with Sam Philips at Sun Records in Memphis. Sam asked Scotty, who had recorded with several bands on Sun, to call this kid and work out a few songs. This was his first meeting with Elvis Presley. Playing his Gibson, Scotty can be heard on every recording the King made up through the soundtrack for “Jailhouse Rock” in 1957. Travis Wammack was a recording artist, studio musician, and songwriter who worked closely with Rick Hall, founder of FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. Travis charted his first hit at just 17 years old with the instrumental “Scratchy,” recorded in Memphis and engineered by Roland Janes, an experience that gave him early insight into the recording studio process. After moving to Muscle Shoals and working with Rick Hall at FAME Studios, Travis played on numerous hit recordings as well as demo sessions, including many of his own compositions.
