Oral History Information

Bobby Vega has been hailed as a bass master of pick-style funk, a tone connoisseur, and a professor of the grooves. His effortlessly fluid bass playing and impeccable rhythmic instincts have made him an essential figure in modern music. Launching his professional career at just 15 with Bo Diddley, Bobby first turned heads at 16 with his unmistakable picked and muted bass line on Sly Stone’s I Get High on You. Since then, his deeply soulful and electrifying bass work has graced performances and recordings with legends such as Billy Preston, Paul Butterfield, Santana, Tower of Power, and Etta James. A passionate collector and self-proclaimed vintage freak, Bobby has an encyclopedic knowledge of basses, amps, and gear. Beyond performing, he has contributed his unique touch to film and television soundtracks, including One from the Heart and Sonic the Hedgehog 3. In 2025, he reunited with Jonas Hellborg at the NAMM Show for Dogal Strings and sat for their NAMM Oral History interview, further solidifying his place as a revered bass icon.
