Darryl Jones
Oral History Information
Darryl Jones was born on the south side of Chicago into a musical family. His father taught him drums and xylophone when he was 7 years old. But when Jones saw his neighbor, Angus Thomas, playing bass in the school talent show, the nine-year-old foresaw his destiny. At 21, with the help of his longtime friend Vincent Wilburn Jr. (the nephew of Miles Davis), Jones landed a life-changing gig with legendary jazz icon Miles Davis, with whom he would record and tour over the next five years. He can be heard on Decoy, You’re Under Arrest, and several live concert albums. Gigs with Sting, Herbie Hancock, Peter Gabriel, Madonna, Eric Clapton, and many others soon followed, and since 1993 he’s been the bassist for the Rolling Stones. When Darryl is not in the studio or on tour with the Rolling Stones, he writes and records his own music, composes film scores, teaches classes, and continues playing with diverse artists and bands. He founded Jones Musical Instruments in 2014 to produce high-quality basses and guitars, combining artisan craftsmanship and modern technologies, for seasoned professionals and dedicated enthusiasts. He envisions a world where music education is available to all, and therefore the company supports programs that bring music into public schools. “In The Blood”, a film chronicling Darryl’s life and career is streaming on Apple TV and Amazon Prime.
