Donnita Hathaway
Oral History Information
Donnita Hathaway is the founder of the Donny Hathaway Legacy Project, which is dedicated to the memory of her father, soul singer and songwriter Donny Hathaway. The organization provides mental health resources, education and resources to support creative artists and those in need. Her father (1945-1979) was well known for his vocals as a solo artist (“The Ghetto” and “A Song For You”), duos with Roberta Flack (“The Closer I Get to You” and “You Got A Friend”) as well as songwriting, penning many of those tunes along with “This Christmas” and “Someday We’ll All Be Free.” Donnita spent 15 years touring with various artists working behind the scenes, which is why serving on the board of directors for the Roadies of Color United (RoCU) is so meaningful to her. During the RoCU’s 2023 conference, she assisted in presenting an educational session devoted to addressing mental health concerns in the roadie industry.
