Doug Lawrence
Oral History Information
Doug Lawrence was first musically inspired by his father, a woodwinds player. However, at a young age he watched as his older brothers’ professional careers developed and Doug had tunnel vision after that, he wanted to be a professional musician! Latching on to the saxophone, Doug developed a style that allowed him to easily move from swing to bop and fusion, to straight ahead jazz. As a result, he has performed and recorded with everyone from Aretha Franklin and Tony Bennett to Roy Eldridge and Joey De Francesco. A special element of his career has been the friendships he has developed with many of his musical heroes and mentors, such as the great Buck Clayton and Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis. Doug has also formed his own groups over the years, such as his Organic Trio, and recorded albums including Soul Carnival in 1997 and Doug Lawrence & Friends, released in 2021.
