John was also a recording artist whose first versions of his songs acted as demos to the artists who heard one they liked and added their own style to make the song uniquely their own. John D also wrote hits such as Ebony Eyes-The Everly Brothers, The Lament of the Cherokee Reservation Indian-Paul Revere and The Raiders and Tobacco Road-Edgar Winter.
