Steve Halpern
Oral History Information
Steve Halpern is an esteemed docent volunteer at NAMM’s Museum of Making Music, which provides an opportunity for him to blend his love of music with his background as an educator. As a youngster, he studied the accordion for three years before pursuing a career in education, both as a teacher and as a creator of early computer-based science programs in partnership with IBM. This experience was followed by numerous entrepreneurial experiences in San Diego. This background enables Steve to incorporate science, innovation, technology and entrepreneurship into his tours giving a unique perspective to even our youngest visitors. In 2012 Steve returned to playing the accordion when he was inspired by and later took lessons from Lou Fanucchi in the San Diego area. This led to gigs in Bluegrass and Jazz and his introduction to the Museum of Making Music, which is located in Carlsbad, California. As a docent, Steve has provided tours for adults and schoolchildren of all ages. He often brings in his accordion, which the kids love, playing and showing them how the instrument works.
