The National Association for Music Education (NAfME), in collaboration with NAMM and several other national partners, conducts an informal annual survey to collect data about the use of federal funds to support music and the arts.

The survey asks respondents about how federal funds supported their programs and assesses how additional needs would be addressed by additional federal funding. The results of the 2023 survey reveal that top issues include:

  • age of musical instruments
  • ventilation, acoustics, and sound support for performance facilities
  • furniture appropriate for music and visual arts classrooms
  • transportation to take students on field trips
  • need for 21st-century tools
  • staffing to help reduce class sizes
  • full-time arts educators at all schools

Responses were received from 388 classroom teachers and district arts supervisors in 48 states between October 2 and October 27, 2023, and the results prove how important it is to advocate for federal funds for music and arts education.
